Our accommodation is purpose built, with spacious grounds and well-equipped classrooms. Within the school grounds we have a number of unique areas, notably a soft room , multi-sensory room and garden and an adventure playground. Pastoral Mission Statement "The creation of a safe, caring, learning environment based on respect and tolerance through which all pupils can achieve their full potential."
The Pastoral care of our pupils is central, and all efforts are made to help each pupil to be the best that he/she can be, socially, physically, intellectually and emotionally. The high staff ratio for each of the teaching groups means each pupil receives specialised individual care. All staff members act as positive role models for our pupils and take every opportunity to promote the pupils self- esteem and confidence. They also encourage positive behaviour through the school.
Curriculum
We offer our pupils individualised educational programmes and deliver these in a variety of approaches and contexts. We endeavour to provide all our pupils access to the N.I Curriculum with the content and approach of which has been altered to meet their individual needs, yet ensuring breadth and depth.
The curriculum we offer consists of the subjects of the Northern Ireland Curriculum and our own curriculum that lays emphasis on the development of our pupils' Physical, Social, Life, Communication, Vocational and Leisure Skills.
Our pupils are taught in small groups in contexts that allow them to develop and practice their priorities and other skills. We also emphasise that all teaching and learning is age appropriate and realistic, using the resources of the school and the community as necessary. Therapy
The therapy department of the school contains 3 rooms and a storage area. i. Speech and Language therapy ii. Occupational Therapy iii. Physiotherapy Spacious accommodation enhances the therapists' ability to use all the resources available to them. Arrangements are made for pupils to have access to Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and or Physiotherapy , at levels quantified by the therapists, as supplied by the local Health and Social Services Trust and as recommended by the Designated Medical Officer.
Autistic Spectrum Disorder Rathore has presently a number of classes within Key stage 1 and 2 primarily for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Some pupils have been successfully integrated into other classes within the school. Many teachers and classroom assistants have received training with respect to a variety of teaching methods - TEEACH, ICON ICAN, and PECS.
In order to meet the individual needs of pupil's with Autistic Spectrum Disorder we endeavour to provide a highly structured programme based on educational targets and behavioural strategies, incorporating aspects from a number of therapies. Internal support is available from our coordinator for Autistic Spectrum Disorder. ICT
Information and Communication Technology has an important role to play in our schools curriculum. It presents the opportunity for all the pupils to access the curriculum using ICT as a tool for learning, motivation and for fun. Teachers employ a variety of approaches and resources to deliver the curriculum through the use of ICT. At present the teaching of ICT in Rathore arises from our own Key Stage curriculum document, based upon CCEA non statutory guidance material. All classrooms have internet access and multimedia projectors and interactive white boards are installed in many of the classrooms. At present a computer suite is available to senior classes.
